Tanning Beds Report
When I first started modeling at 17 years old (a while ago now!) I wanted to look my absolute best. My mother had her own home tanning bed and I used it regularly before shoots and castings as I felt that it gave me an edge.
It wasn't just the look that it gave me - slightly golden, a little freckly, and yes, it even made me appear slimmer - but the feeling too. I felt great, despite the winter weather I was warmer for hours and it even lifted my mood.
I wouldn't say I was addicted to the 'hit' of the tanning lamps but now I feel that I absolutely was! I never used tanning lotion and felt that sunless tanning with fake tan lotions didn't give me the same lift.
Then I started to model in Japan and became surrounded by people that were obsessed with being as white as possible and detested tanning. On outdoor shoots assistants would carry paper umbrellas over my face to shield my white skin from the strong sun.
My automatic response was to move them aside so I could catch some rays but they taught me the dangers of the sun and also educated me to see the beauty of my pale face.
After this I slowly weaned myself off tanning beds and began to see my white skin as one of my assets. Now you couldn't pay me to get on tanning beds even though I sometimes secretly crave a 10 minute 'hit'. For me sunless tanning became the way forward and now I wouldn't dream of sunbathing without tanning lotion.
So, I understand the push and pull factors involved in using tanning beds and I hope that together we can figure out the best way forward for our appearance and health today and tomorrow!
